“It is written, ‘One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God’.” Matthew 4:4. God’s word is a source of life which contains infinite help and wisdom. When the Word of God is read in the spirit of faith, it leads to unimaginable spiritual growth. To encourage, motivate and inculcate the habit of regularly reading of the Word of God, various events are organized for the Catechism students throughout the year. The various topics and events in Bible Kalotsavam give opportunity for children with different talents to read the Bible and interpret it according to their talent – either in the form of an Essay, Story, Drawing, Mono Act, Dance, Mime etc.,

Category

  • LP – Std I to IV
  • UP – Std V to VII
  • HS – Std VIII to X
  • HSS – Std XI to XII

Bible Kalotsavam 2023 will have 9 Individual Stage Events, 5 Literary / Drawing Events and 4 Group Events.

  • Forane Level Bible Kalotsavam shall not be conducted this year
  • A student can participate in Maximum 3 Stage Events, 2 Literary Events and 2 Group Events Only
  • Online Audition shall be conducted on 27th Aug 2023 for all the individual events.
  • Each Catechism Unit to nominate their best 3 students for the individual events by 6th Aug 2023
  • An audition of the individual events will be held online for a maximum of 2 minutes
  • Single Dance & Mono Act: Catechism Unit Office Bearers to email a 2-minute video of their top 3 students to [email protected]
  • Top 20 students from each category shall be selected from the online audition to participate in the Diocese Level Bible Kalotsavam

Diocesan Bible Kalotsavam: Literary Events: 19 Nov 2023;

  • Top 2 Students from each parish for each category will directly participate in the Diocese Level Literary Events Competition
  • Only one team will be allowed for group events from a parish.
  • The grading system will continue as earlier.
  • The Ever-rolling trophies for the top 3 parishes for Group Event will remain as earlier.
  • The schedule of the Diocesan Bible Kalotsavam will be as follows:

Day-1: Writing and Drawing (19 Nov 2023, Sunday, 2 pm to 6 pm)

  • Essay Writing: UP, HS & HSS
  • Story Writing: UP, HS & HSS
  • Poetry Writing: UP, HS & HSS
  • Poster Coloring: LP, UP, HS & HSS
  • Pencil Sketching: LP, UP, HS & HSS

Day-2: Individual Stage Events (26th Nov 2023, Sun, 8 am to 6 pm)

  • Elocution English: LP, UP, HS & HSS
  • Elocution Malayalam: UP, HS & HSS
  • Extempore English: UP, HS & HSS
  • Psalm Reciting (Malayalam): UP, HS & HSS
  • Bible Reading (Malayalam): LP & UP

Day-2: Group Events (26th Nov 2023, Sun, 8 am to 6 pm)

  • No option for name change after the registrations.
  • Only HM / Secretary / Senior Teachers can be the parish representatives.
    • No PTA Representatives will be allowed for this post.
  • Group Event points will be added to the overall points to declare the Category-wise Championship of Parishes.

1. Elocution (English)

Only the topic given in advance shall be allowed.

Time limit: 5 minutes. A warning bell (single bell) will be given 1 minute before the cut off time and the final bell (double bell), at the end of allowed time. Participant shall be disqualified if the performance exceeds the time limit.

Criteria for Evaluation: Content: 50 (Ideas, Structure, Language), Style: 50 (Presentation, Pronunciation, Clarity, modulation, Eye Contact) (Total: 100 marks)

2.Elocution (Malayalam)

Only the topic given in advance shall be allowed.

Time limit: 5 minutes. A warning bell (single bell) will be given 1 minute before the cut off time and the final bell (double bell), at the end of allowed time. Participant shall be disqualified if the performance exceeds the time limit.

Criteria for Evaluation: Content: 50 (Ideas, Structure, Language), Style: 50 (Presentation, Pronunciation, Clarity, modulation, Eye Contact) (Total: 100 marks)

3.Extempore Speech (English)

Participants will be given the topic 5 minutes before their speech. The participant shall be given 5 minutes time to prepare for the topic. Along with the topic, the participant shall also be given a blank sheet which they can use for writing the notes. This sheet can be used as a reference while giving the speech. Participants are strictly not allowed to use any references like books, mobile phone etc., and to communicate with any other person. Any participant found violating this shall be disqualified.

Time limit: 5 minutes. A warning bell (single bell) will be given 1 minute before the cut off time and the final bell (double bell), at the end of allowed time. Participant shall be disqualified if the performance exceeds the time limit.

Criteria for Evaluation: Content: 60 (Ideas, Structure, Language), Style: 40 (Presentation, Pronunciation, Clarity, modulation, Fluency, Eye Contact) (Total: 100 marks)

4. Psalm Reciting (Sankeerthanalapanam)

  1. Only the Psalms mentioned “Topics For Bible Kalotsavam Events – 2023” shall be recited.
  2. Participants can choose any verses of their choice. Eg., for Psalm 119, they can choose to recite either verses 1 to 10 or verses 41 to 56  etc.,
  3. It is not compulsory to recite all the verses in the Psalms.
  4. Participants should ensure that they complete reciting within the 3-minute time-limit
  5. The Psalm should be recited by-heart and by joining the hands together.
  6. Exact Bible verses as per POC Bible should be recited, no changes and modifications are allowed.
  7. Back ground or play back music is not allowed. Start with Psalm number and end with ” Glory be to the Father….”.
  8. The chanting style shall strictly be as per the YouTube link given below. The tune is also available in the “ATHMARAKSHA” Mobile app

Chanting Style:   

  1. Participants to follow the chanting style as per the above YouTube video or refer to “ATHMARAKSHA” Mobile Application. No other recitation style shall be accepted for Bible Kalotsavam.
  2. “ATHMARAKSHA” Mobile app is available in ANDROID PLAYSTORE and iOS APPSTORE

 4. Once the app is downloaded, select – മലയാളം / ഓഡിയോ / സങ്കീർത്തനങ്ങൾ POC Bible / സങ്കീർത്തനങ്ങൾ – പ്രാർത്തന and select the Psalm of your choice

Please note: This application and the YouTube link video is to be used only to understand the Psalm Recitation Style. All other rules eg., starting and ending the Psalm etc., to be followed as per the rules mentioned above.

Language: Malayalam only, Reference: POC Bible

Time Limit: 3 minutes. No warning bell will be given. The final bell (double bell) will be given at the end of allowed time. Participant shall be disqualified if the performance exceeds the time limit.

  • Participants shall be provided with a plain slip by CBC Mandya
  • Participants shall write the Psalm Number they shall be reciting
  • Before performing participant shall handover the updated slip to the judge who has the Holy Bible.
  • The judge will then check if the Psalm is as per the topic given
  • The judge will then open to the correct page of the Psalm in the Holy Bible
  • Once the judges are ready, they will ask the participant to start
  • Only once the judge has given approval shall the participant start the performance and time shall be noted.

Criteria for Evaluation:Melody & Chanting: 60, Style: 40 (Devotion, Clarity). (Total marks: 100)

5. Bible Reading (Visudha Grandha Parayanam):

The POC Bible provided by CBC Mandya shall be placed on a table on the stage. The participant shall take a slip from the box which will have the portion they need to read. This slip should then be given to the judge who has the Holy Bible. Once the judge approves, the participant shall then come back to the stage and pick up the Holy Bible, identify their portion and start reading. The time shall be noted from the moment the participant touches the Holy Bible. The reverence to the Holy Bible and Style of Reading will be noticed. Participant shall not mention the Book, Chapter, verses etc., Reciting or chanting of the portion is not allowed

Language: Malayalam only, Reference: POC Bible

Time Limit: Maximum 3 minutes. (actual time may vary based on the Bible portion asked to read). No warning bell will be given. The final bell (double bell) will be given at the end of allowed time.

Criteria for Evaluation:Clarity & Language: 70, Style: 30 (Devotion, Structure). (Total marks: 100)

6.  Bible Story Telling

Original Bible stories based on the theme is only allowed. Story should be by-hearted. It can be presented with actions, but singing is not allowed. Creative language may be used, but the content and message of story should remain same.

Language: Malayalam only, Reference: POC Bible

Time Limit: 3 minutes.  No warning bell will be given. The final bell (double bell) will be given at the end of allowed time. Participant shall be disqualified if the performance exceeds the time limit.

Criteria for Evaluation:Presentation Style: 50, Language & Fluency: 50 (Total marks: 100)

7. Mono Act

The theme should be taken from the Bible portion given in advance. Language is Malayalam. Make up is not allowed.

Time limit: 5 minutes. A warning bell (single bell) will be given 1 minute before the cut off time and the final bell (double bell), at the end of allowed time. Participant shall be disqualified if the performance exceeds the time limit.

Criteria for Evaluation: Acting: 60 (Characterization, Sound Modulation, Dialogues), Theme: 40 (Originality, Language, Fluency (Total: 100 marks)

8. Single Dance (Folk Dance)

Only biblical theme dance is allowed. Only Malayalam song is allowed. Fusion of songs is not allowed. Dance should be folk style.

Time limit: 5 minutes.

The soft copy (MP3 format) should be submitted in two weeks in advance to CBC Mandya. The participant should hold a pen drive that contains only the song (in MP3 format) as a back-up and the same should be submitted to the control room in order to address any unexpected technical issues during the event. 

No live orchestra is allowed. No warning bell or final bell will be there during the performance. The Parish representatives are responsible to check the play time of the song before the submission. If the play time exceeds the time limit, the participant shall be disqualified and shall not be allowed to perform.

Criteria for Evaluation:Performance (Expressions, rhythm, movements): 80, Theme: 10, Make-up & Costumes: 10 (Total: 100 marks)

9.Solo Song

Only devotional Malayalam song is allowed. No instrument is allowed.

Time limit: 3 minutes. No warning bell will be given. The final bell (double bell) will be given at the end of allowed time. Participant shall be disqualified if the performance exceeds the time limit.

Criteria for Evaluation:Melody: 70, Rhythm: 30. (Total marks: 100)

Rules and Regulations of LITERARY Events

10. Essay Writing:

The area for reference for the Essay Writing competition of each section is intimated already. The actual topic of Essay will be based on this and the same will be announced only at the time of competition. The medium of the competition is English.

Time Limit: 1 Hour, Maximum 600 words/ 4 pages (excluding the title).

Criteria for Evaluation: Content: 50 marks, Style: 50 (Language, Structure) (Total: 100 marks)

11. Story Writing:

The area for reference for the Story Writing competition of each section is intimated already. The actual topic of Story will be based on this and the same will be announced only at the time of competition. The medium of the competition is English. Story Writing can be approached in two different ways:

  1. The same theme and meaning of the Bible Portion can be taken and developed as a story based on today’s context. For Eg., Wedding at Canna – The same meaning, message and theme of the parable can be taken and used as a story in the present context.
  2. The same story and timeline of the Bible Portion can be used to develop the characters further. For Eg., Wedding at Canna – The same story can be taken and developed further by giving names to the characters, their backgrounds etc., We can connect the relationship between the family and Mother Mary, have dialogues between them and develop the story further.

Time Limit: 1 Hour, Maximum 450 words/ 3 pages (excluding the title).

Criteria for Evaluation:Creative Writing: 60, Language & Structure: 40 (Total: 100 marks)

12. Poetry Writing

The area for reference for the Poetry Writing competition of each section is intimated already. The actual topic of Poetry will be based on this and the same will be announced only at the time of competition. The medium of the competition is English.

Time Limit: 1 Hour, Maximum 24 lines (excluding the title).

Criteria for Evaluation:Creative & Poetic Style: 60, Language & Structure: 40 (Total: 100 marks)

13. Pencil Sketching

The area for reference for the Pencil Sketching competition of each section is intimated already. The actual topic of sketching will be based on this and the same will be announced only at the time of competition.

Time Limit: 1 Hour

Criteria for Evaluation:Perfection: 70, Creativity: 30 (Total: 100 marks)

14. Poster Colour Painting

The area for reference for the Poster Colour Painting competition of each section is intimated already. The actual topic of colouring will be based on this and the same will be announced only at the time of competition. Water based poster colours only shall be allowed for painting. Oil colours, crayons, sketch pens, colour pencils etc. shall not be allowed.

LP Students of Std I to IV only shall be allowed to use Oil Pastels (i.e., Crayons)

Time Limit: 1.5 hour.

Criteria for Evaluation: Colour combination & Neatness: 70, Creativity: 30 (Total: 100 marks)

Rules and Regulations of Group Events

15. Group Dance (Folk dance)

Only biblical theme dance allowed. Only Malayalam song is allowed. Fusion of songs are not allowed. Dance should be folk style. Only one team (which may include students from Std I to XII) is allowed from each parish. Minimum number of participants is 5 and maximum number of participants is 9.

 Time Limit: 10 minutes. The pen drive contains only the song (in MP3 format) or a soft copy (MP3 format) should be submitted to CBC Mandya 2 weeks before the event. The team leader should hold a pen drive which contains only the song (in MP3 format) as a back-up and the same should be submitted to the control room in order to address any unexpected technical issues during the event. 

No live orchestra is allowed. No warning bell or final bell will be there during the performance. If the play time exceeds the time limit, the team shall be disqualified and shall not be allowed to perform.

Criteria for Evaluation: Performance (coordination, rhythm, movements): 75, Theme: 20, Make-up & Costume: 5 (Total: 100 marks) 

16. Margamkali  

Song, make up, costumes and ornaments shall be strictly traditional. Adaptation to any other dance form is not allowed. Only one team (which may include students from Std I to XII) is allowed from each parish. Number of participants is 6+1 (singer). Song shall be sung by the singer & the participants. Elathalam shall be played by the singer. The first padam (vandanam) is mandatory.

Time limit: 10 minutes. A warning bell (single bell) will be given 1 minute before the cut off time and the final bell (double bell), at the end of allowed time. The team shall be disqualified if the performance exceeds the time limit.

 Criteria for Evaluation: Performance & Perfection: 60, Costumes, Ornaments & Make up: 20*, Singing: 20 (Total: 100 marks)

Instructions

*Follow the rules of Kottayam Hadusa.

*Traditional white (kodi) dhoti and blouse (mundu and chatta) should be used.

*Same kind of lace is required for mundu and chatta,black colour lace should not be used. Red is preferred.

*Ornaments: Mekkamothiram, Kunukku, Ear stud (should contain 5 or 7 white stones, Thakki is not allowed), Kalthala (silver colour), Kaivala (golden colour, one in each hand), Kasumala (of medium length, necklace is not allowed)

*Bendinga & Kontha are not compulsory.

17. Group Song:

Only Christian devotional Malayalam songs are allowed. Fusion of songs may be allowed. Only one team (which may include students from Std Ito XII) is allowed from each parish. Minimum number of participants is 5 and maximum number of participants is 9. No instruments shall be allowed. 3 mikes will be provided for Group Song.

Time limit: 8 minutes. A warning bell (single bell) will be given 1 minute before the cut off time and the final bell (double bell), at the end of allowed time. The team shall be disqualified if the performance exceeds the time limit.

Criteria for Evaluation: Melody: 60, Rhythm: 30, Synchronization: 10 (Total: 100 marks)

18. Mime:

The theme of mime should be purely Biblical. Adaptations and modifications are not allowed. It is an event only for boys. Only one team (which may include students from Std I to XII) is allowed from each parish. No properties are allowed except face mask and gloves. Recorded back ground music is allowed. Minimum number of participants is 4 and maximum number of participants is 7.

Time limit: 5 minutes.

The Parish Representatives are responsible to submit the soft copies mp3 format (named with chest numbers) to CBC atleast two weeks before the event. The team leader shall carry a pen drive that contains only the song (in MP3 format) as a back-up and the same should be submitted to the control room in order to address any unexpected technical issues during the event.

 The final bell (double bell) will be given at the end of allowed time. The team shall be disqualified if the performance exceeds the time limit.

Criteria for Evaluation

Performance & Perfection*: 50, Innovation & Creativity: 40, Make-up & Costume:10 (Total: 100 marks)

*Technical perfection includes Rhythmic Accuracy, Precision, Stage Balance& Synchronization.

*Exit from the stage in between the performance is not allowed.

*Uniformity in appearance, steps and movements have positive effects.

*Use of hand gloves is compulsory.
